I have lived with my family in my Ecobuilt homes since 1986.

My present home in Pennsylvania is 4163 square feet with 18 foot cathedral ceilings. I set my heat at 70 degrees in the winter and my air conditioning at 74 degrees in the summer....... On January 2, 2008 we topped off our 500 gallon propane tank and on April 10, 2008 we still had 50 gallons of propane left.

Be mindful of who you are asking for advice.

Example: If your ask a person that sells windows if replacing your old windows will save energy, expect yes as the answer. This is like asking a fox to guard a hen house. Don't be fooled-- replacing windows is rarely the solution!

Old windows are usually only a fraction of the problem. The real problem is the amount of window glass in your home..... Even the best most expensive windows don't have a high insulation value......On a warm day heat easily comes in through the glass and at night if you're heating your home the heat goes out just as easily through the glass.

If you decide to hire a "professional" make sure to ask about their costs to heat and air condition their home and business. You probably want to work with someone that "practices what they preach".
